What is the Water Intake Calculator?

The Water Intake Calculator estimates how much water you should aim to drink each day based on your body weight, activity level, and the climate you live or exercise in. Generic advice like 'drink eight glasses a day' doesn't account for the fact that hydration needs scale with body size and vary significantly with how much you sweat, whether through exercise or simply living in a hot, humid climate. This tool starts from a commonly cited baseline of roughly 33 milliliters of water per kilogram of body weight, then adds extra recommended intake based on your activity level — from sedentary up to athlete-level daily training — and further adjusts for climate, since hot or very hot conditions increase fluid loss through sweat even without exercise. The result is shown in milliliters, liters, fluid ounces, and an approximate number of standard glasses, so you can use whichever unit is most practical for tracking your intake through the day, whether that's refilling a marked water bottle or counting glasses.

How to use it

Enter your current body weight, which forms the baseline of the calculation. Select your typical activity level, ranging from sedentary (little to no regular exercise) up to athlete (intense daily training), since more activity generally means more fluid lost through sweat that needs replacing. Select the climate you spend most of your time in — temperate, hot, or very hot — to account for additional fluid loss from heat exposure. Click 'Calculate' and the tool will show your recommended daily water intake in milliliters, liters, fluid ounces, and an approximate number of standard 250ml glasses. Use this as a daily target, spreading intake throughout the day rather than drinking it all at once, and adjust upward on unusually hot days, during illness, or when sweating more than usual.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the 33ml per kg baseline come from?

It's a commonly referenced general hydration guideline that scales water needs with body weight, used here as the starting baseline before activity and climate adjustments are added.

Does this include water from food and other drinks?

This calculator estimates total daily fluid needs. In practice, some of that comes from food and other beverages, so the number shown is a reasonable target for combined fluid intake rather than plain water alone.

Should I drink more on days I exercise heavily?

Yes. Select a higher activity level, or manually add extra water on unusually intense training days, since sweat losses during exercise can be substantial and vary a lot person to person.

Is this recommendation safe for everyone?

This is a general estimate and not medical advice. People with certain health conditions, such as kidney or heart issues, should follow fluid guidance from their doctor rather than a general calculator.
